Prime Ministry Human Rights Committee head Vahit Bıçak yesterday called on people to defend their rights and said there are many countries that see Turkey as a good example of human rights improvement, reported the Anatolia news agency. "We have to work hard to change Turkey's image abroad regarding human rights. Our country is seen as having a poor human rights record," said Bıçak to the press following a public informational meeting in Çorum.

Britain assists in rights handbook preparation
Board Chairman Vahit Bıçak said at the meeting that the rate of petitions filed by Turkish citizens with the European Court of Human Rights had dropped significantly. He mentioned that the Copenhagen criteria and other European Union harmonization laws that have been implemented have contributed to this decrease and added, "This development was explained and complimented in EU reports."
