Prime Ministry Human Rights Committee head Vahit Bıçak yesterday called on people to defend their rights and said there are many countries that see Turkey as a good example of human rights improvement, reported the Anatolia news agency.
"We have to work hard to change Turkey's image abroad regarding human rights. Our country is seen as having a poor human rights record," said Bıçak to the press following a public informational meeting in Çorum.
He was in Çorum to monitor the implementation of a project under the Human Rights Committee in cooperation with the European Commission on improving the efficiency of human rights committees in provinces and towns.
Bıçak said human rights committees in provinces are tasked not only with handling complaints but also with educating the public about their rights and how to exercise them.
Speaking to citizens at a local Çorum park, Bıçak urged people to defend their rights. "If seven of you can get together and establish an association, you will have more of a say in organizing your life," Bıçak said.
